Acting on the world

Equine activities

In shortA horse responds straight away to how the child holds their body, which teaches without words.

The idea

A horse responds to the child’s body immediately and honestly: if the child is tense, the horse notices. That gives the child concrete information about their own body and their effect on another, without words. The routine (grooming, tacking up, riding) is predictable and full of small steps.

How to start

  • Start with caring for the horse, before riding.
  • Notice what the child says about the horse: they often talk about themselves.
  • Agree how many sessions you will try.

What to look for

What to look for: centres with certified instructors, small groups, the same sequence each session and time to get to know the horse.

The common mistake

Expecting quick results or treating the activity as therapy.
