Bounded Thread

Children with additional needs usually have a one-page profile. It is written once, copied into a Word file and passed between schools, and it rarely says more than likes, dislikes and a few strategies. Bounded Thread keeps one page that grows with the child. Young children fill it in with an adult, with pictures and choices, and older children write it themselves: their interests, strengths, how they work, when things go well, what gets in the way, and what helps and what has not. Adults never rewrite the child's words. Underneath, they add what they saw, how they interpret it, what was tried and whether it worked, and a short account of how it fits together.

The idea we are testing

1The child's words firstA friendly page for younger children, with pictures, choices and a read-aloud button, and a plainer one as they grow.
2An annotated version for adultsWhat was seen, how it is interpreted, what was tried and whether it worked, and how it fits together, revised as the evidence changes.
3One thread from school to schoolThe new school is added as a reader instead of being sent a copy. Over time the young person takes it over.

Where it is now

A first prototype exists. It is unfinished and changes often, so what you see may differ from what we finally release.

When it is ready, it graduates into a product or service.

Who it is for

Children and young people

A page about them, in their own words, that keeps up as they grow.

Families

No more retelling the whole story at every new school.

Schools and professionals

A current, annotated starting point, with the child's permission.

Taking part

The prototype has an invented example and lets you start a thread with invented details. If you would like to try it in a school, write to Ricardo.
