Bounded Rehearsal

Some children find it very hard when they cannot tell what will happen next: a new place, cousins coming to stay, being told "no" or having to share. Bounded Rehearsal helps the adults around them prepare. You describe the place, the visit or the moment, and what helps your child. Rehearsal sets out what will be different from what your child knows, how to prepare in the days before and a short walk-through to practise together. You can also make your own visual supports to print or use on your phone.

The idea we are testing

1Know what will be differentEach plan compares the new place or moment with what your child already knows, so the differences have a name before they happen.
2Practise firstA short walk-through in pictures and simple words that you go through together, as many times as your child wants.
3Learn from each timeAfter the visit, a few questions record what helped and what was hard, and the next plan uses them.

Where it is now

There is nothing to try yet. We are shaping it with the people it is for, and will show it once it works.

When it is ready, it graduates into a product or service.

Who it is for

Families

Prepare a child for a new place, a visit or a hard everyday moment, and make visual supports at home.

Nurseries and schools

Plan a trip, a new room or a change of adult, and print the same supports the family uses at home.

Psychologists and therapists

Give a family something practical to take home after an assessment.

Taking part

Bounded Rehearsal is being tested with families now. If your child finds new places or changes hard and you would like to try it, write to Ricardo.
