Acting on the world

Climbing

In shortEach move is a small problem to solve, and the child chooses how hard the route is.

The idea

In climbing each move is a small problem: predict where to put your foot, test, adjust. The body gives immediate feedback and progress shows on the wall. Uncertainty is graded (easier and harder routes) and the child chooses the level.

How to start

  • Start at a climbing gym with low routes.
  • Celebrate what they tried, not only how high they got.
  • Ask what they noticed in their body when higher up.

What to look for

What to look for: gyms with children’s classes, routes of several levels and instructors who let the child set the pace.

The common mistake

Pushing to climb higher than the child chooses.
